Our Story
The Orthodox Christian presence in North America reaches back to the missionary work begun in Alaska in 1794. Among those who carried the Orthodox faith throughout the American West was Saint Sebastian (Jovan) Dabovich, born in San Francisco in 1863 to Serbian immigrant parents.
Saint Sebastian devoted his life to missionary work across North America. In 1894, he helped establish Saint Sava Church in Jackson, California. The following year, he met with Orthodox immigrants in Virginia City, Nevada, seeking to establish an Orthodox church in the region.
More than a century later, that missionary legacy continues in Northwestern Nevada.
